Keppel donates $270,000 to the Singapore Environment Council (SEC) in support of the School Green Awards

31 March 2023 – Keppel Corporation has pledged to donate $270,000 over three years to the Singapore Environment Council (SEC) in support of the annual School Green Awards (SGA) from 2023 to 2025. This was announced on 31 March 2023 by Executive Director of the SEC, Ms Jen Teo, at the signing of a donation agreement which was held in conjunction with the launch of the 2023 edition of the SEC-SGA. The donation will be made through Keppel Corporation’s philanthropic arm, Keppel Care Foundation.

Mr Ho Tong Yen, Chief Sustainability Officer of Keppel Corporation and CEO of Keppel Care Foundation, said, “Keppel is committed to sustainability, and we are delighted to support the Singapore Environment Council in the organisation of the annual School Green Awards over the next three years. Through the School Green Awards, we can contribute towards empowering the next generation to be sustainability leaders and responsible stewards of the environment.”

The top three categories for the SGA are: Outstanding Environmental Project Award – recognising the most innovative environmental projects, Best 3R Award – given to outstanding projects that reinforce practices and habits of the 3Rs, and Vanda Miss Joaquim Sustained Achievement Award – honouring schools that have attained an overall score of more than 90 percent during the project assessment, for the third year in a row.

“Sustainability is not just a buzzword, but a critical investment in the future of our planet. We are fortunate to have the support of the Keppel Care Foundation. The youths and the teachers participating in the SGA embody the spirit of sustainable innovation, showing that even small changes can make a big impact when we work together towards a common goal. We hope our partnership with the foundation and the schools will inspire others to join us in creating a more sustainable world for generations to come,” Ms Teo said.

The annual SGA, which is celebrating its 22nd edition this year, honours Singapore’s youths for their contribution in advancing our nation’s sustainability and net zero 2050 targets. It is SEC’s yearly flagship outreach program with the goal of empowering students and faculty in all Singaporean schools to advocate for the environment in a responsible and creative way. In 2022, the SEC received a total of 313 submissions from 287 schools, including pre-schools, elementary schools, secondary schools, and institutions of higher learning, demonstrating the value that young people place on environmental sustainability. An exhibition and an awards ceremony are part of the one-day event.

SEC-STARHUB SCHOOL GREEN AWARDS 2020

Given the unique COVID-19 situation around the world, Singapore Environment Council (SEC) wants to ensure that the health and safety of our participating schools are of utmost concern to us. Hence, we appreciate your kind patience despite this delay.

For the past few months, the COVID-19 pandemic has changed our way of life around the world and in Singapore. On one side of the spectrum, global carbon emissions has reached a new low in several decades, but on the other hand, single-use plastics has never been a greater challenge. The threat of climate change does not pause even in the midst of crisis and we would like to urge eco champions to rise to the occasion and continue to lead the charge on innovative new green solutions.

To that end, the SEC-StarHub School Green Awards will proceed this year with a few revisions to its criteria and requirements so as to better safeguard all participants. These changes will ensure that all participants comply with existing ordinances on social distancing while still being proactive in spearheading green initiatives within your school and community. We will officially launch the SGA 2020 application in a few weeks’ time.

To start off, we’ve created a closed Facebook group for teachers in the SGA community. We hope that this group will facilitate better communication (updates and feedback) and for you to also share about your SGA experiences! Please respect the privacy and comments of all members in the group.

SEC-STARHUB SCHOOL GREEN AWARDS 2021

The School Green Awards are back!

We were extremely sad that we had to postpone the SGA 2020 awards ceremony last year due to the covid-19 pandemic. Nevertheless it was really encouraging to see many schools still advocating the Green message and pushing ahead with unique sustainability efforts within their school community. More than 260 submissions were received last year with many showcasing their creativity in the projects being carried out!

Following our decision to call off the 2020 awards ceremony for the safety of schools and students, these submissions from 2020 will be automatically re-entered into this years SGA.

We do however want to encourage schools to also submit their entries this year and have made a few revisions to simplify the submission format and methods. Upon registering they will be able to download this year’s submission form, schools will just need to fill in the submission form and email it back to usAll submissions be judged in fairness and in accordance to the judging criteria as stipulated in the SGA website.

We’ve created a Facebook Page to help everyone stay up to date with this year’s SEC-StarHub School Green Awards.
